The Game We All Know

Most of us played Snakes and Ladders as kids. You roll the dice, climb ladders, and avoid snakes that send you tumbling down.

At first glance, it’s just a simple board game. But if you really think about it, Snakes and Ladders is a perfect metaphor for life.

Life is rarely a straight climb to success. It’s full of progress and setbacks, joy and heartbreak, breakthroughs and disappointments. Understanding this game-like rhythm can help us approach life with more patience, resilience, and hope.

The Dice: Choices and Circumstances

In the game, every move depends on the dice. In life, the dice represent both choices and circumstances.

Sometimes we “roll high” — things go smoothly, opportunities appear, doors open. Other times we “roll low” — delays, struggles, or simply moments outside our control.

We may not control the dice, but we always control how we move forward. Every roll count, even the small ones.

The Ladders: Growth and Opportunities

Ladders represent the moments that lift us higher — breakthroughs, blessings, and opportunities.

  • A mentor believing in you.
  • A chance to heal and grow.
  • An unexpected opportunity at work.

Climbing ladders in life reminds us that progress isn’t always slow. Sometimes, one step — one decision — can accelerate your journey.

The Snakes: Setbacks and Falls

Then come the snakes.

One moment you’re close to your goal. The next, life pulls you down. Setbacks like heartbreak, failure, burnout, or unexpected loss can feel like sliding back to the beginning.

But here’s the truth: a snake doesn’t end the game. It just means you have to roll again. Every fall teaches you resilience, humility, and strength.

The Board: The Bigger Journey

If you look at the Snakes and Ladders board, it zig-zags back and forth. That’s exactly how life is.

We expect progress to be a straight line — school, career, family, success. But it’s up and down, forward and backward.

The board reminds us: life isn’t about how fast you reach the finish line. It’s about staying in the game — rolling again, no matter how many snakes you face.

What We Can Learn from Snakes and Ladders

  • Progress is never wasted — even small steps move you forward.
  • Opportunities (ladders) often appear when you least expect them.
  • Setbacks (snakes) don’t define you; they prepare you.
  • Life is not a race — it’s a journey of resilience, courage, and growth.

Reflection

Where are you right now on your Snakes and Ladders board?

  • Are you climbing a ladder — finally making progress after struggle?
  • Are you at the bottom of a snake — facing a setback that feels unfair?
  • Or are you simply rolling the dice, waiting for your next step?

Wherever you are, remember: the game isn’t over. Keep rolling. Keep moving. Keep becoming.
