The NDIS is going through major changes and it’s one of the biggest topics in the disability sector right now. Here’s what you need to know:

 1. Big changes to eligibility

The NDIS is moving away from diagnosis-based access. Instead, eligibility will be based on functional capacity (how disability impacts daily life)

Concern:
Many people are worried this could mean losing access even with a diagnosis.

 2. Participant numbers will reduce

The government plans to reduce participants by around 160,000 by 2030

Concern:

  • Who will lose support?
  • Are alternative supports ready?

3. Cuts to some supports (especially social funding)

Funding for social & community participation is already being reduced

Concern:

  • Impact on mental health
  • Reduced community inclusion
  • Closure of valuable programs

4. New “foundational supports” & programs

New systems like:

  • Thriving Kids (for children)
  • Foundational Supports (for those not eligible)

Concern:
These are not fully clear yet, leaving families uncertain

5. Stronger rules for providers

  • Mandatory provider registration expanding
  • New digital payment systems
  • Crackdown on fraud

Goal: Improve transparency & safety

6. New planning system coming

A new NDIS planning framework is being introduced (delayed to 2027)

Aim:

  • More consistent budgets
  • Fairer planning decisions

What’s the main concern right now?

The biggest issue isn’t just change, it’s uncertainty

People are asking:

  • Will I still be eligible?
  • Will my funding be reduced?
  • What happens if I exit the NDIS?

Many families and providers feel:
The system is changing faster than supports are being replaced.

These reforms aim to make the NDIS sustainable for the future, but right now:

  • Participants are anxious
  • Providers are adapting
  • The sector is in transition
